Bullying and Suicide

I know I have blogged about bullying before but it has become such an epidemic that I think it warrants a second blog.  It seems that all too often... the consequences of bullying are becoming so severe that adolescents are taking their own lives. (I am sure this will lead me to blog later about the topic of suicide).... but at any rate.. the story below is an account of two adolescents who took their own lives to escape bullying.

Bullying has apparently made it's way to the Chilton County Alabama school system in a major way.  This past week marks the second teen suicide within the school system and both adolescents were girls as well as the victims of bullying.

On Saturday morning the mother of a twelve year old came home to find that her daughter had hung herself in her bed room closet.  The twelve year old was then air-lifted to a nearby children's hospital.  Her father, who was serving our country in Iraq, made it home just in time to be with her during her last days.

Prior to this incident, another student who was the victim of bullying jumped to her death from an over-pass.  Apparently, she was bullied because of her looks.  It is becoming blatantly obvious that this school system is rife with bullies and from the outside looking in, it doesn't appear that school officials seem to even give a damn.

A study by Anderson Cooper from CNN found that those who bully were often bullied themselves, although, I do not believe either of the afore mentioned adolescents actually bullied anyone.  It is disgusting to know that places of education have becom social heirarchies where promotions are gained through putting others down and education is far from the goal (at least as far as the students are concerned.)  I commend all the teachers who attempt to address the issue of bullying and teach both the bully and the victim.
